U.S. Marshals Service reports threats more than doubled in two years.
The Supreme Court recently submitted a 2025 budget request to Congress, requesting $19.4 million to increase security personnel for the court and the private homes of the nine justices. $5.8 million of the funding would expand the activities of the existing Supreme Court Police, and $13.6 million would expand the police to take over additional home security currently provided by the U.S. Marshals Service.
“Ongoing threat assessments indicate that there are evolving risks that require continuous protection,” the budget request stated. The U.S. Marshals Service has reported that serious threats against federal judges rose to 457 in fiscal year 2023, from 224 in fiscal 2021.
The request is part of the overall budget request submitted for the entire federal court system, which totals $9.4 billion. The rest of the judiciary also seeks $805.9 million for court security, citing “the significant increase in threats against federal judges.”
